Andrew Hopkins is diplomatic and senior correspondent with TRT World based in the Turkish capital, Ankara. He has also sub-anchored rolling news programmes from the field, and has many years’ experience working in various locations around the world.

He has covered the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in October 2023 from Jerusalem, the campaign in Iraq to re-take Mosul from Daesh in 2016-17, the Syrian Civil War from the Turkish border, the Armenia-Azerbaijan War of 2020, and major international summits such as with NATO leaders, the G20, the EU, UN Syria Conferences and the COP climate meetings. He was also one of the few Western journalists allowed into Turkmenistan, covering the 2017 election.

Andrew has interviewed prominent international political figures.

He was the first journalist to interview the Ukrainian Foreign Minister after he met his Russian counterpart following peace talks in Antalya in Turkiye in 2022. He has also spoken to the Foreign Minister of Iran during the protests there of 2022-23, also the foreign ministers of Tanzania, the Netherlands, Georgia, Hungary, Palestine, Venezuela, Azerbaijan among others, plus the Presidents of Colombia and Bosnia, and the British Trade Minister Kemi Badenoch.

He speaks English and Turkish, has a working knowledge of French and Arabic, and a basic smattering of German. He graduated from Warwick University in the UK with a degree in Politics with International Studies.

Starting out

Early career

Andrew started out initially in newspapers, on a small local weekly in Lincolnshire in the UK called the Epworth Bells and Crowle Advertiser. From there he worked on daily newspapers in Scotland and Portsmouth, before moving to London to work for Sky News in the early days of its website.

Since then he has worked in TV news production for Sky, the BBC, Channel Four News and Channel Five News, all in the UK, before moving to Al Jazeera English in Doha, Qatar. There he rose to the position of programme editor, where he worked on the coverage of the Arab Spring, and was a part of the team that won the News Channel of the Year prize at the Royal Television Society Awards in 2012.

Joining TRT World

In 2015, Andrew moved to Istanbul and was part of the launch team of TRT World in Turkiye, working first as a senior producer/reporter before being promoted to correspondent, then diplomatic correspondent and senior correspondent. He has also lived in Cairo, Egypt.
